Conclusions

Gross Errors in Results

  • The one lab to test vitamin B12 gave very significantly erroneous results
  • Two labs out of three gave very significantly erroneous results for homocysteine
  • Two labs out of four gave very significantly erroneous results for methylmalonic acid

Errors in Documentation

  • One lab supplied documentation with dates that did not match the samples
  • One lab gave many incorrect sample dates in pathology reports

Citing Grossly Erroneous "Normal" Range

  • The one lab to test vitamin B12 cites a normal minimum very significantly below the safe level
  • Three labs cite a normal maximum very significantly above the safe level for homocysteine
  • Two labs cite a normal maximum significantly above the safe level for methylmalonic acid

Excessive Time to Process Samples

  • Two labs took up to 36 days to process samples for methylmalonic acid, a weekly test

Refusal to Release Results

  • One lab refused to release the Series 1a results because I will not give them an assurance that I will not identify their lab if I publish the results

Incorrect Handling of Samples

  • One lab sent out three samples frozen in SST tubes, against the tube manufacturer's advice, invalidating the results.

Loss or Destruction of Blood Samples

  • One lab "lost" two blood samples
  • One lab "lost" 29 blood samples
  • One lab deliberately destroyed at least four blood samples

Hostile Response to Complaints

  • One lab responded to my complaints with a threat of legal action
  • Two labs strongly defended that lab
  • No lab offered to investigate my complaints
